Quentin ist ein begabter Eigenbrötler mit Hang zur Melancholie und einer Leidenschaft für Fantasie und Magie. Kurz bevor er sein Studium in Yale antritt, wird er auf merkwürdige Art in das Brakebills College für Magie gebracht, besteht die Prüfung und darf nun gemeinsam mit seinen Kommilitonen alles über Illusionen, Heilkunde, Natur und Außersinnliches erlernen. Seine Sandkastenfreundin Julia begleitet ihn, fällt jedoch durch die Prüfung und sucht die Magie an einem anderen Ort.
