Im Mittelpunkt steht eine Gruppe Durchschnittsmenschen, die drei Jahre nach Ausbruch der Epidemie den letzten Überlebenden aus New York nach Kalifornien bringen sollen. Dort befindet sich nämlich das letzte noch funktionierende Labor. Die Antikörper im Blut des Nichtinfizierten sind zwar die letzte Hoffnung für den Fortbestand der Menschheit, aber er birgt auch ein dunkles, gefährliches Geheimnis.
